Ulster County SPCA
The Ulster County SPCA took in 15 dogs that were evacuated from South Carolina ahead of Hurricane Florence earlier this month. Five dogs came to Kingston days before the hurricane hit, but the other 10 came in recently to make room at shelters in the South for animals in emergency situations. The heroes in this feature are the Ulster County SPCA, its volunteers and the community, which has responded with generous donations of food, blankets and monetary gifts. Brother Wolf Animal Rescue, an organization in Asheville, N.C., evacuated and transported all the animals to shelters in the North, and though not a local agency, also is a hero for placing these endangered dogs. Four of the dogs, many of them hounds, already have been adopted by Ulster County residents.
