Poughkeepsie firefighter Kenneth Deichler is being hailed as a hero for rescuing a swimmer in distress in late July. As first reported by the Poughkeepsie Journal, the 29-year-old Deichler used a personal flotation device to get to the victim, who was being held above water by three other swimmers.
During that incident, another swimmer died. Paul Moschitta, 49, of Poughkeepsie, tried to help the first victim, but he was later pulled out by the tide, according to the Poughkeepsie Journal. Authorities recovered his body a week later.
Deichler, who has been a Poughkeepsie firefighter for six years, said knowing his equipment well and keeping a calm head, helped him save the other swimmer, whom he described as “blue in the face” by the time he got to him. The victim was transported to a local hospital for evaluation.
