Habitat for Humanity ReStore
The Habitat for Humanity ReStore opened in Kingston in 2013. Merchandise in the 40,000-square-foot former warehouse includes drastically discounted and gently used furniture, lighting fixtures, construction materials and home goods donated by the public. Habitat resells them to raise money to build homes for low-income families in Ulster County. Ninety percent of the sales goes toward that mission. Josie Eriole, the store manager, said before the ReStore opened, the Ulster Habitat built a house every other year. Now, the agency is able to build at least two homes annually. Those who benefit might not qualify for a conventional mortgage, so Habitat steps in to fill the gap and make home ownership a reality.
