Cara Mia Bacchiochi

Cara Mia Bacchiochi, the founder of Hope on a Mission, helps Poughkeepsie’s homeless and addicted women every Saturday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. She and her team of volunteers pass out shoes, clothing, food and hygiene items at the intersection of Main and South Clinton streets. Bacchiochi, a one-time drug addict and prostitute, said her aim is to restore dignity–without judgment–to addicts walking the streets. Because of her efforts, several women have found the pathway to sobriety and are aiming to better themselves. Hope on a Mission receives no funding, but many volunteers have stepped forward to donate winter coats and boots and make warm meals for the needy. Bacchiochi hopes to one day open a residential refuge for women to help them get on solid ground in a more supervised setting.
